To lay out the soleplate and top plate of a wall, first cut a pair of straight 2×4s or 2×6s to length. Tack the soleplate to the subfloor, and set the top plate flush against it. Make your first mark ¾ inch short of your on-center spacing (15¼ or 23¼ inches), and make an X past that mark. This will place the center of the first stud 16 or 24 inches from the corner. Measure down the length of the plates, and mark with an X where each of the common, full-length studs will fall—every 16 or 24 inches. You can also measure and mark the locations of cripple studs (C) and jack studs (O).
